We offer expert care, guidance and support to people living with a terminal illness

Story

Day 1 - strong westerly blew us away from Walney Island. Took it in easy stages to complete 68 miles to our excellent first overnight stop at Brownber Hall, Newbiggin-on-Lune.  Amazingly managed to avoid all the downpours until the last 6 miles from Tebay but still finished in the sun.  Yellow jersey deservedly awarded to the tandem! Support team brilliant, keeping us refuelled, bikes repaired and general morale boosting.

Day 2 - dominated by the long climb up Tan Hill in the wind and rain but rewarded by a good rest in the very busy Tan Hill pub.  Took a while to tear some of the group away for the trip into Bowes. Yellow jersey went to the bike doctor Nick G and Jono (aka Shep).  We are half way there and David will have learned how to get out of his clips by the end - only one fall today!

Day 3 - weather very kind to us with hardly a spot of rain. 56 or so miles to Great Ayton achieved steadily - legs a bit weary but we only have the North Yorks Moor to conquer and David, Jonny et al still need to master those clips!  Nick and Adrienne take yellow jersey honours

Day 4 - only about 30 miles but the N York Moors gave us some nasty steep hill challenges before we finally made our descent into Whitby and then back up to Sneaton Castle for a wonderful reception.  What a trip and glad everyone made it safely.  Thanks to everyone who has supported us.

The Jubilate Coast to Coast Walney to Whitby between 12th and 15th May 2011 is an event organised to contribute to the overall fundraising efforts for the Jubilate Tribute Fund. (For the specific aims of the fund please click on the blue underlined word)

We are full of admiration for David and his four fellow amigos who are taking on the Jubilate Raid Pyreneen (they call themselves “Inappropriate amigos”, we think they are mad), so please dig deep and sponsor them.

Sarah (Judith’s sister) and a group of us wanted to take on our own challenge in the UK and settled on a 172 mile coast to coast cycle ride starting at Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness and finishing in Whitby. Joo, Joobee, Jubilate (some of the nicknames we gave Judith) was at school in Whitby so we felt it was a good place to finish.  Other stops en-route include Newbiggin on-Lune, Bowes and Great Ayton

The majority of us are over 50 and haven’t ridden a bike since school days, so the thought of 6-8 hours in the saddle four days in a row is more than a little daunting, but the lycra has been purchased and the training has started (for some!) despite the weather.

The sole object which will keep us to task is raising as much money as possible for the Marie Curie Nursing Fund to support families caring for their terminally ill loved ones at home, in honour of Judith’s memory.

 The Group to-date consists of:

Sarah and Tom Moore

Chris and Jono Wood

Nick and Adrienne Wood

Andrew Brook and Eleri Griffiths

3 Inappropriate Amigos (David, Edward and William Roberts)

Nick Gains

Jeff Jenkins

Paul

George and Mark Hughes

Others cycling one or more days: Tom Hawkins, James Marlor Johnny Charlton

Support team: Brettle, Sue, Claire H, Jane, Claire G and Katy

Please give generously to support this worthy cause. All friends, family and colleagues are welcome to join us on this trip either as riders or as the support team and help raise even more money.  If you are interested in taking part contact Nick at nick.wood2@btconnect.com or James at jrmarlor@aol.com for the details.

Every £20.00 raised by this fund will contribute another hour of nursing care in the home
