Story

John Butler passed away at his home in Elmsett on Wednesday 3rd June 2020 - in his memory we are collecting donations for SESAW (Suffolk Essex Small Animal Welfare) and the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity. John was born in Clitheroe in Lancashire in 1942 and moved firstly to London and then Southend-on-Sea when he was 7 years old.

He married at the age of 22 and whilst the marriage didn’t last, he was blessed with his first Daughter, Tiffany.

John met and later married “the girl next door” Gail in 1981 and then became Dad not only to Tiffany but to Gail`s Daughter, Wendy also.

John worked for Ford`s for 17 years and after quitting the rat race, he decided that he, Gail and the Family should move to Blaenau Ffestiniog in North Wales and they did this in 1978, although even after living in there for some 16 years, learning the Welsh language eluded him.

Sadly, after a while, John realised that he needed to return to work and after a few small jobs, he secured employment at Trawsfyndd Nuclear Power Station as a Health Physics Monitor.

Gail and John`s Daughter, Holly, was born in 1986 and on her 6th Birthday, Wendy gave birth to her first child, Alex Angharad, leaving John in charge of a birthday party for a 6 year old, including having to make the jellies and cakes, while Gail drove Wendy to the hospital. It must have been fun for John with little children running around with their sticky fingers!

Whilst living in Wales, John and Gail enjoyed renovating 5 houses up until 1994 when they returned to Essex and John transferred to work at the Bradwell NuclearPower Station.

Meanwhile Wendy had given birth to her second child Benjamin Gareth!

John finally and properly retired in 2006 and had many happy years enjoying the garden, wildlife – especially his love of badgers and birds - and the fun parties with the neighbours.

John became a Grandfather for the third time with the birth of Tiffany's daughter, Heidi, and a few years later John and Gail moved to Elmsett in Suffolk to be closer to their Daughters.

John enjoyed Formula 1 racing (a joint passion which he shared with his Daughter Wendy) and of course his love of music, some of his favourite bands and performers being Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Status Quo and Billy Idol. Many a heated debate has been had between John and Holly over the merits of different bands and usually over a few sherbets!

Holly fondly remembers often bringing the latest favourite song of hers to play to John to see his reaction. Sometimes it was favourable …..!

Gail and John enjoyed gardening together. Gail would of course do the work while John supervised! But he did do that very well indeed.

John's funeral is being held on Monday 13th July at 10.30am - due to Covid-19 the service will unfortunately be invite only.
