Story
I'm fundraising this summer for Street Child United. Street Child United aim to tackle the widespread that stigma street-connected children face and to raise awareness and understanding of their situation. The charity aims to raise awareness and take action to ensure that these young people are protected, respected and supported to their fullest potential.
This year, and prior to the main FIFA World Cup, SCU will be hosting a Street Child World Cup in Doha, Qatar. Teams of young people from all corners of the world will be in attendance, from Colombia to Bangladesh and Uganda to the Philippines. Whilst they will compete in a genuine World Cup-style football tournament, there will also be parts of the event dedicated to arts, education, and more. Most importantly, they will be given a platform on which their voices can be heard and their stories told, in order to help change their perception and treatment.
The work Street Child United do off the pitch has the ability to create impactful change as the world media raise a spotlight on the real, serious issues these young people face. At the Street Child World Cup the 27 teams will be campaigning for access to education, protection from violence, birth registration and gender equality.
I will be volunteering at the Street Child World Cup this October to assist with the day in day out operation of the event. My work will involve helping the event to run smoothly - helping prepare for each day and working directly with the young people to ensure they have the most valuable experience they can. I am extremely passionate about the issues that the event highlights as well as the sport the event is built around - football. I am delighted to be a part of such an impactful event.
