I'm designing a community 'ozone garden' at Sim's Garden in Homewood, Alabama. It will be open to the public, and will be an opportunity to learn about the impacts and importance of air pollution, particularly tropospheric ozone. The plants in the garden are either 'bioindicators', which show damage in response to high ozone levels, as well as plants that are resistant to ozone. Ozone occurs naturally in the upper atmosphere, but man-made ozone in the lower atmosphere can harm crops and aggravate respiratory issues. I hope to provide a hands-on and visual way for people to learn about tropospheric ozone, how it is made, and how to help clean up our air.
