MEET MATTHEW ASHTON-RICKARDT
Drumming up support
Matthew’s a drummer whose life changed forever when a motorcycle accident made his right arm immobile.
After seeing major improvements over the years, Matthew dreams of regaining full movement one day, and launched a campaign to raise money for the tech to help him get there.
Watch how Matthew’s making his dream a reality.
Matthew (known as “Mash”) experienced a motorcycle accident that nearly took his life and caused several serious injuries, the most severe of these losing all movement in his right hand, arm, and shoulder.
Over time, he’s seen major progress, regaining significant nerve response. And with this, he’s turned to his community for help funding an electronic brace: a new device that could help him get full movement back to his arm.

"Everyday is tough both physically and mentally, but I just take each day at a time and keep pushing on. Quitting is not an option!"
- Matthew Ashton-Rickardt
This cutting-edge tech would allow Matthew continue his favourite hobby by gripping his sticks with only his thoughts, as well as help his nervous system rebuild the pathways for natural movement in the long term.
So far, Matthew’s raised £45,000 of his £60,000 target to cover his bespoke fitting, device construction, and physio for his arm. If he’s successful, he’ll be one of the first in the country to use this tech…and be able to continue drumming long into the future.
