Hi
Thanks for visiting the Gig in a Gallery fundraising page.
Gig in a Gallery got started in July 2013. The concept was born out of singer/songwriter, Melissa James, learning about a charity called Small Steps Project which helps women, families and children who live on rubbish tips in the developing world. Moved by the stories she heard told by Amy Hanson, the charity's founder, of people living on municipal rubbish dumps in Cambodia and other developing countries, Melissa began to think of ways she could help Small Steps Project to raise funds.
The first Gig in a Gallery concert took place at The Gallery Cafe in Dalston in July 2013. The second at Canvas Gallery in Wimbledon; Dorothy's Gallery in Paris followed and later came Camberwell's House Gallery, the Queen of Hoxton and the final concert of the year was at the October Gallery in December.
The concerts were incredible and each gig had its own created magic. Support from artists who dedicated their time to performing was amazing. Singer/Songwriter, Tom Robinson headlined a multi-artist event at the Queen of Hoxton and celebrated poet Dean Atta also joined the line-up. Art galleries donated their spaces (or heavily reduced their hire costs) and local businesses helped cover expenses for the events or they sponsored the concerts in kind. Music and art blended with philanthropy, raising funds yet all the while showcasing the work of artists and galleries.
There were no plans for the project other than to raise some money to help Small Steps and some awareness of their work but the idea blossomed, support was found from many sources and it therefore seems only fitting that the charity fundraising concerts should continue.
Gig in a Gallery and Fixers
Gig in a Gallery is now very pleased to be working to raise money for the charity, Fixers. A charity which encourages young people to use "...their past to fix the future", this is a charity that gives young people - aged 16 to 25 - a voice, a creative outlet and a chance to do something positive both for themselves and for the good of others.
The next series of Gig in a Gallery concerts will therefore raise money to support the work of Fixers and you can learn more about the charity and what they do by visiting their website.
The Chrissy B Show, a programme which airs three nights a week on Sky Channel 203, came to December's final Gig in a Gallery performance to learn more about the concept. You can watch the film they made, which aired in early March 2014, by clicking here:
