Story
Norman gave a "Gyrox Goes Global" talk in the Larne Town Hall recently. The Rotary Club of Larne organised the function and then collected £375 at the door. Thank you to everyone who donated and a special thanks to the Larne Rotary Club for all their assistance.
It's June 2015 and at last Norman Surplus is back in the air. He has set off from Portland in Oregon and is flying to Portland in Maine. He will then be heading up into Canada, across to Greenland and Iceland and then back home to Northern Ireland. Here's the story so far:
Back on 22nd March 2010, Norman Surplus started his record-breaking flight around the world in an autogyro. He took off from Larne in Northern Ireland with the plan to fly 27,000 miles through 26 countries. The autogyro has an open cockpit, so it is a bit like flying a motorbike. He can only fly during the day, which means that every night he has to find a landing strip, a bed for himself and 'Roxy' his autogyro, a hearty meal and fuel for the next flight. Six weeks into his adventure, disaster struck. During take-off from a small airstrip at Nong Prue in Thailand, Norman and his gyro fell out of the sky. Thankfully Norman wasn't hurt but his trusty Roxy ended up in a bad way. It took a while but repairs to the aircraft were eventually completed and a very relieved Norman set off once again on his journey. He reached the Philippines before red tape and bad weather called a halt on his progress for 2020. He spent the winter in Larne but in Spring 2011, he headed back to the Far East to restart his flight from where he left off.
His chosen charity has to be Bowel Cancer UK as Norman had this type of cancer eight years ago. He has come out the other side and has set out on this mammoth expedition to prove that there's life after a serious illness such as cancer. He is hoping to raise as much money as possible for people who are now in the same situation as he was in 2003.
When his adventure resumes, you be able to follow his progress using the TRACK link on his website: http://www.gyroxgoesglobal.com/ .
