Story

Sorry folks but it’s that time again! I know many of you have been generous enough to support me in the past but this isn't getting any less painful for me and I don't see why you lot shouldn't make an effort too! I know times are tough but anything that you can spare really will be very much appreciated. The Coeliac Society really does a wonderful job of campaigning to spread awareness of the disease and to further research. If you want to know any more about the disease keep reading, otherwise hit the "Donate" button and dig as deep as you can.

Much love and sincere thanks

Gavin

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease that results in intolerance to gluten. Gluten is present in wheat, barley, rye and oats and as a result anything made from derivatives thereof (including beer!).

The long term effect of ingesting gluten for sufferers of Coeliac disease include mal-absorption causing serious nutritional deficiencies, osteoporosis and a heightened likelihood of gut lymphoma. There is a vast array of other unpleasant side effects too. The only method of controlling the condition is to totally exclude gluten from ones diet – no breads, no pasta, no pastry, biscuits or cakes; nor anything that may be cross contaminated such as chips fried in the same oil as batter - the list is very long. There can be no cheating on the diet. It is not like an allergy where the effects are immediate and transient. It is a lifetime condition and currently there is no cure. Happily, alternative gluten free products are becoming more widely available.

Roughly one in a thousand people are diagnosed with Coeliac disease but it is estimated that one in a hundred people actually suffer from it. The majority remain undiagnosed and at risk. The Coeliac Society contributes hugely to research into the disease, the possibility of finding a cure and raising public awareness. Many undiagnosed sufferers who probably have not even heard of the disease could prevent later misery in life with a very small amount of knowledge.

There you go that’s the science bit. If you want to know more about Coeliac disease or the Coeliac Society their website is extremely informative - http://www.coeliac.co.uk/ . I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease in January 2007. The society has proved an invaluable source of information and has helped remove the fear of the unknown. It is an important cause and well worthy of continued support. I really appreciate any contributions you can make either big or small.
