Story

Zero Suicides for the world.... but as we all have to start somewhere...
Thank you for taking your time to read our page "Zero suicides for West Midlands"

Suicide...

Something that isn't talked about enough and usually only when someone you know... has tragically died by suicide. I know its scary to talk about it and I can only imagine how baffling it may seem to someone who has never felt suicidal to comprehend that someone could feel this way... But more people than you realise contemplate suicide ... and its important that suicide becomes a topic of conversation, in EVERY institute, so that help and intervention can be given as soon as possible.

Did you know that Suicide is more likely in men and despite the increase in mental health services and talking therapies, suicide rates are on the increase. And services are over stretched and in need of more man power to facilitate the amazing work they do.

"Suicide is complex. It usually occurs gradually, progressing suicidal thoughts, to planning, to attempting to finally dying by suicide"

This statement could not be more true, and its the initial fear to talk about feeling suicidal that is the problem. It never seems okay to tell someone that you are suicidal, with fear that they are going to call the police or emergency services, because they are fearing for your life. Well you can't blame them. But feeling suicidal is different to acting on your suicidal thoughts. Feeling like you can openly talk to someone about how you feel, really is something we need to learn to be okay about.

Allowing someone to talk about their suicidal feelings could save their life. I know that it's alarming to hear but if we become a culture where we can address suicidal thoughts and feelings earlier, then less people will end up acting on those feelings. No one is ever alone!!!

Birmingham Mind are an absolutely amazing charity, I have worked with them personally and I have also gained support from them. Unfortunately the man power and funds required for their service to reach more people is limited. And this is why we want to raise funds for them.

One of my best friends Bárbara Gomes, she has been amazing, supportive, encouraging but most importantly she always believes in me even when I am at my lowest. I owe this girl so much! And I'm extremely lucky to have the friends and family that I do. I always feel i owe my friends and family more than I'll ever be able to give them back. Because their support and commitment and belief in me is invaluable. And I don't know how well I'd be coping with out them.

Together, Barbara and I are walking 10 miles at the walking out of darkness event, on the 6th of May. However it isn't about the amount of miles, but the importance of walking united as a community in support for suicide prevention.
