On 31/05/16 our beautiful baby son Zachary David Hodge was brought into this world via emergency c section following a routine midwife appointment that showed his heart was beating too fast.
He was 34 weeks and 4 days. He was taken straight from us to intensive care at Southmead hospital to be treated and from there transferred to St Michaels Hospital NICU for more specialist care.
While there he battled through CPR and Defibrillation to stay with us and following consultation was transferred to Bristol Children's Hospital to be placed on an ECMO/ECLS machine to give his heart a rest and hopefully heal.
The ECMO machine gave us a week with our beautiful son where he battled long and hard to stay with us as they tried to take him off life support once and he was not quite strong enough so went back on to it.
We were advised on Monday that Tuesday the 7th June would be his last chance to come off life support as if his heart had not healed by then it never would.
We spoke to him and told him that it was his decision if he wanted to stay or go and we would love him no matter what choice he made.
On the morning of Tuesday the 7th of June, Zachary passed away in our arms, this was the first chance we had to hold him. He was one week old.
I know many of you will ask if there is anything you can do for us and while there is nothing that can bring him back or allow us to see him one last time there is something you can do in his memory.
Please make a donation to Bristol Children's hospital - without their care, support and dedication we would never have got to spend the cherished time we had with Zach, reading to him, talking to him, telling him how much we love him, kissing him.
No one should have to lose their child and with your help they can continue their fantastic work.
Also please donate blood, it is free and only costs your time. Without this him and many others would never have a chance. It makes a huge difference to children and adults lives.
We would like to thank all of the consultants, doctors, sisters, surgeons, midwives and nurses for the care Zach received, we will never forget.
Thank you to our family and friends for their unwavering support during this most difficult of times. We love you more than we can say.
We are broken beyond words but we know our baby is finally at peace.
