Story
We are a group of five friends who decided to undertake a challenging winter ascent of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon to support WWF. 3 of us are doing all 3 peaks and 2 of us are doing 2 peaks amounting to 13 peaks in total to be climbed between all of us. The combined height of the 3 peaks is over 3,400m and the combined distance to travel is over 35 km on foot and over 450 miles driving and we have 24 hours to complete the challenge. Most of us have no prior winter mountaineering experience and are training to acquire the skills for the challenge. We are doing the challenge with Adventure Peaks who provide skills training and experienced guides to take us to the tops.
This is a winter climb and we decided to dedicate it to endangered winter species snow leopards and polar bears.
Snow leopards are thinly spread across 12 countries in Central Asia and are at home in rugged mountain landscapes of over 3,000m. They are elegant solitary cats with beautiful spotted coat that insulates them from the elements. Poaching, conflict with people and habitat destruction are threatening their survival. Their numbers are estimated to have declined by over 20% in under two decades.
Polar bears are the planet's biggest land-based carnivores - although they actually spend most of their lives around water and ice. So they are at particular risk from global warming, which is melting the Arctic sea ice they depend on. It's hard to imagine such impressive, powerful predators being vulnerable but man-made climate change is making life tough for them - so their fate is in our hands.
