Story
Just 4 short years ago, my Mum was running her own house. She was shopping, chatting to neighbours, feeding local cats, arranging appointments, cooking, cleaning, and catching busses to visit her family. As an 80-odd year old, she was a little bit forgetful at times – who isn’t?
But, within a few short months, she was robbed of these simple pleasures by one the cruellest of diseases. The diagnosis we had all feared. She has dementia and Alzheimer’s. My Mum is the same, determined person she always was. But now she forgets names, places, dates, and even words. She knows what she wants to say, but not how to say it.
It’s heartbreaking to see her struggle to remember how to hold a simple conversation. We do all we can, but we know the long term prospects are that the condition will continue to take pieces of her memories away.
My Mum, and my Mum-in-law, are two of 850,000 people in the UK who are diagnosed with dementia.
The Alzheimer’s Society works with people like my Mum and their families. They offer advice and support for those suffering dementia, and their families. They offer confidence, motivation, and reassurance.
The Alzheimer’s society are also committed to find a cause and cure for this disease. They are dedicated to defeating dementia.
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
