On the evening of Friday 8th October we will be sleeping out in Woking town centre and we will be coming live throughout the evening on our social media channels @YorkRoadProject.
Recognising 'World Homeless Day':
Our 'Sleep in' event runs into the weekend in recognition of World Homeless Day which is on Sunday 10th October. The concept of 'World Homeless Day' emerged from online discussions between people working to respond to homelessness from various parts of the world. The Inaugural World Homeless Day was marked on the 10th of October 2010 and since its founding, World Homeless Day has been observed every year on the 10th of October.
Cherisse Dealtry (Chief Executive) says, “Government statistics estimated that during the pandemic the ‘Everyone In’ initiative provided accommodation & support to 90% of the people rough sleeping across the country. Here at York Road Project (YRP) we supported over 30 people a night in our temporary facility at HG Wells to make sure they didn’t rough sleep over the past 18 months. By doing the Sleep Out we want to continue to raise awareness that rough sleeping does exist, it can happen to anyone and really highlight the misunderstanding in society of why people become homeless. We are dedicated to ending homelessness and we believe that everyone deserves a home of their own”.
All donations raised will go to the York Road Project and helping defeat homelessness in Woking.
