Story

So for the those of you that know me, you know I like a wine or two and have always used the excuse that "its my birthday in Jan so I cant do dry January" however this time round I have a reason (not just my health) to participate. I will be taking part in Dry January to try and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, in remembrance of my Granddad and Grandma who passed away this year from cancer. My other Grandma passed away recently with dementia, so I will be doing something else later on to honor of her.

My Granddad Eddie was one of the nicest people you would ever meet. He would always try and help people whenever he could and in his late 80's he even signed up to be the primarily carer for his partner Betty, who also passed away from Cancer. A remarkable thing to do for anyone at his age. He nursed her at home so she didn't have to go into hospital and was by her side every step of the way. He started his life in the Army and then moved onto be a tailor. We would go regularly to stay with him and Betty to the caravan on a weekend where we would spend the time walking, feeding the chicken's and ducks and chasing after the dog! We had it confirmed that the day before he passed away he had primary cancer in his liver which had spread to his pancreas and bowel. He also had COPD and two blood clots in his heart. The doctors words where that he should have made in past Christmas of 2020. My Granddad never moaned, he just got on with it. He passed away in the early hours of Monday 8th March 2021.

My Grandma Kathleen, has recently been described as a 'good christian person'. She would go out of her way to help people, however wouldn't tolerate nonsense and was one of the most caring people I have ever met. I have lovely memories growing up baking with her, writing Christmas lists to Santa and watching Winnie the poo. She had a heart of gold and was/ still is very highly thought of in the Darlington Community. She was a mathematician who went onto be the head of the Maths department at Hummersknott Academy in Darlington, where she will have helped so many people throughout her time there to go onto be successful in their own careers. In the April of 2020 she was diagnosed with Bone, kidney and lung cancer. Never smoked a day in her life and her alcohol intake was minimal, with only enjoying a glass of red on occasion. She passed away peacefully on Monday 5th April 2021 in the early afternoon.
