Story
Five years ago we lost Bart's lovely Mum to Alzheimer's, and in June I am walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks in her memory and to raise money for the Alzheimer's society. It's a 24.5 mile/39.2 km hike and takes around 12 hours...so we're in training! Our wonderful Nanna also suffered from Alzheimer's in her last years so the hike is also in memory of her.
We watched both Bart's Mum in Brazil and my Nan in the UK slowly forget where things were, then who we were and finally who they were. This terrible disease takes the people we love from us way before they are actually gone. My mother-in-law actually passed away as a result of the final stages of Alzheimer's and spent the last 7 years of her life in bed, unable to communicate and being fed liquid food and water in a baby's bottle. It was so sad to see her suffer like this and had a huge effect on our family.
I would like to do this walk in memory of these two incredible women who had such an impact on our lives and whose minds we lost to Alzheimer's.
The Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
