Story
I am so grateful to the Manchester Group of this charity and to the charity as a whole.
On 29th September 2014, my beautiful daughter Shirley decided to take her own life. As a family, our lives changed forever. We had lost a beautiful loving and caring daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. Full of light, love and laughter, her memory is precious to us all. This is the most traumatic thing we will ever experience in our lives. How could we ever come to terms with this huge loss?
It was actually Shirleys employer who mentioned the SOBS Charity to me and on the first week of November 2014 I attended the group for the first time. There I met others who had also lost a loved one to suicide. Mum's dad's, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, partners, friends & others who had been plummeted into a world of grief. There I found empathy, understanding & support from others who had experienced this terrible loss. Some had been coming to the group for many years and were only too aware of the different stages of grief, others, like me, were only at the beginning of a painful journey of trying to make sense of life again. I'm nowhere near completely comfortable in this new life but as a family we are learning to live our lives and get out there and make a difference. Shirley wouldn't want it any other way. We all miss her terribly and always will. Suicide is the most confusing method of death and SOBS Is out there trying to do what they can to support and bring awareness to those affected. As far as I'm aware, funding comes though the generosity of those who have been bereaved by suicide & fundraising by individuals who wish to support those to come, who, may find their help invaluable.
