Story
What started as random chatter on fitness levels gradually morphed into a team of four willing to take on the mighty UK Trailwalker challenge. This is a non-stop trek of 100 kms (62 miles) over the South Downs in under 30 hours to be held over the weekend of July 14th 2018.
The event raises funds for the Gurkha Welfare Trust (http://www.gwt.org.uk) who do a commendable job of ensuring that Gurkha veterans, their widows and their wider communities are able to live with dignity. In the late 1960s, following the end of various Eastern conflicts, there was a significant reduction in the number of serving Gurkhas in the British Army. It was realised that many Gurkha soldiers and their dependants or widows in Nepal faced destitution in old age. Many of these soldiers had served in the World Wars. However, they had not served the 15 years needed to qualify for an Army pension. This gap is now being filled by the Trust. The event is run by Oxfam who need no introduction and a part of the proceeds go towards the charitable work they carry out across the globe.
As for us, we realized early on what we had let ourselves into, and have, since late 2017, been training hard, including many Sundays away from home and family, travelling to train on difficult terrain as well as being able to walk through the night after a full day of walking. With a fortnight to go we are feeling as good as we can despite each of us having different parts of our bodies complaining bitterly, reminding us that we aren't quite in our 20s anymore :-)
We have set an ambitious target of £7,000 to be raised - help us get there quickly and surely there's no better way to guarantee that we are put through some serious pain and suffering . . . all for good causes!
Please dig deep and support us now!
Finally, a big shout out to Justin and Ambuj who will be our support crew during the event, looking after us and making sure we leave each checkpoint in high spirits. This would not be possible without their generosity in giving up their weekend to provide us with logistical support.
