In support of my London marathon 2019 fundraising efforts for Action for Children my amazing musical colleagues in the orchestra of WNO came up with the idea of taking a grade 1 exam on an instrument they’d never played before. It’s fair to say it’s been fairly hilarious so far, but also much harder than we’d realised- it’s made us appreciate our colleagues more and is getting less funny as the exam draws near! With challenges such as a cracked bassoon, slipping cello pegs, a flute that insists on being sharp, finding a xylophone to practise on and simply having enough puff to get through those pieces and scales without passing out the tension is building! Although this is a fun idea the marathon and fundraising were as a result of wishing to show our support to our colleague’s family following the terrible loss of their daughter.
