Story
I'm taking part in the 20 for 20 Challenge for WMUK, the only charity in the UK focused solely on Waldenstroms Macroglobulinaemia (WM), a rare type of blood cancer. The goal of the charity is to improve the quality of life and survival of people with WM by providing support, and ultimately finding a cure.
I was diagnosed with WM in November 2018 and started treatment in February 2020. The day to day challenges of living with a rare cancer that no-one seems to have heard of, let alone pronounce, has been and remains difficult, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. WMUK actively helps me understand my disease through literature, support forums and virtual conferences.
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on rare and less common cancer charities - with community fundraising events being cancelled, like many smaller charities reliant on voluntary donations, WMUK are feeling the impact of COVID-19 on their funding sources. With more than 55,000 cancer patients in England currently waiting for key tests, the emotional and practical support provided by these smaller cancer charities is needed now more than ever. WMUK have joined forces with 20 other charities who provide support for rare and less common cancers, to create a unique and exciting 20-day challenge. I'll be completing my 20-day challenge filled calendar any time from September 20th - November 20th. I aim to let everyone know what challenges I am up to through photographs and information sharing using #20for20. With your help, we can ensure WMUK are able to continue supporting everyone affected by WM. Thank you for your support!
