Story
Since 1988, St Luke’s has been providing palliative care to local people, supporting them in ways which go beyond the scope and funding of the NHS.
Why is the Hospice close to our hearts?
Lexie - On 24th January 2019 I lost my dad (Papa) to a stage 4 brain tumour. Just over a week before his death he went to St Luke's for a week of respite. Unfortunately within days it became clear he wouldn't be coming home. The care provided by all the staff at St Luke's was phenomenal. Papa was at the forefront of the care. Checked on regularly, kept as comfortable as possible. A couple of days before he passed a lovely HCA came to him. He wasn't talking by this point or accepting food. However, she offered him some whiskey and ice cream. His eyes lit up and a smile filled his face. We watched as he savoured every small drop. It's a memory that will stay with me forever. I wish more than anything that Papa had not been taken from us. As things are, without that being an option, I'm so thankful and grateful that he was comfortable and calm being cared for at the most wonderful place - St Luke's.
Tania - I am walking in memory of my dad, Allan, who died from bowel cancer on 8th August 2018, having been healthy all his life and diagnosed six months earlier. Not only was he my Dad, he was a GP who had conducted important scientific research into prostate cancer. Sadly, there was no hospice like St Luke’s available in the area he lived, but by raising money, I hope more families in our area can benefit from this crucial support when they really need it. Thank you for sponsoring The Wistaston Swans- we really do appreciate it!
Anne - My mother-in-law, Cath, died in 2019 after a very shocking diagnosis for terminal cancer with everything then happening so quickly. She was very brave and spent her last days at St Luke’s. For the family at such a difficult time this was a haven of care and serenity and we could not thank the staff enough for their care and concern for our loved Mum.
