We support families bereaved by suicide to offer comfort during this difficult time

Story

Frazer and I are walking the 102 miles of the Cotswold Way from Chipping Camden to Bath in memory of our best friend Steve, who we tragically lost in December last year. We are doing this walk over 5 days from 15th-19th August 2022.

This adventure is something that we always planned to do as a three, and we know that Steve will be with us the whole way.

Bereavement by suicide is particularly traumatic. In addition to powerful feelings of grief, people can struggle with anger, guilt, and confusion. Initial feelings are often shock, numbness, and disbelief. This type of grief can lead to invasive thoughts, flashbacks, and suicide idealisation (65% of people bereaved by suicide are more likely to make an attempt on their own life, rather than those bereaved in other ways). It can manifest itself with lack of sleep and appetite, exhaustion, and low self-worth.

This is why Sunflowers is an important charity, for which I would welcome your support.

About the charity

Sunflowers was created in memory of Pete Morris who died by suicide in 2016. His family developed the Charity to walk alongside others bereaved by suicide and to be a small ray of light in the darkness; offering others comfort and support that is so desperately needed at such a difficult time. Sunflowers endeavour to provide other families with practical and professional support so they do not feel overwhelmed and alone. This we hope will give a glimmer of hope for the future. Sunflowers also raise awareness around mental health and suicide both on social media and by networking locally and nationally. We deliver accredited training to the wider community and presentations sharing our story. We highlight that it is Okay to not be ‘Okay’ and the importance of talking and of course listening. We feel that everyone can play a small part in connecting with and helping others to feel less alone.
