William Kay - research into epilepsy

Our wonderful son, William, died suddenly and without warning on 7th April 2011 at home. His death has been attributed to SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death by Epilepsy). He was 21 years old and a 3rd year MChem student at the University of York. It was a great shock to all of his family and friends and we are utterly devastated.
Will was a gentle, kind-hearted, intelligent young man. His mild eccentricities endeared him to everyone who met him. His unique way of thinking made him a brilliant chemist and scientist. Our loss is great but the loss to the scientific world is even greater.
Little is known about the causes of epilepsy and it can affect anyone at any time. Around 500 people die each year from SUDEP, mainly young men between 20 and 30 years old.
Epilepsy Research UK is the only UK charity which funds scientific research into the causes and effective treatment of this debilitating condition. Will was a scientist so we think ERUK is the most appropriate charity for his memory. We will spend the rest of our lives raising money so that maybe another family can be spared the horror we are going through.
