Rotary SleepOut, 17 September 2016
We are organising a Sleep Out to help homeless charities in Canterbury

Story

On Sept 17, myself and other  Canterbury business people, have been invited by Canterbury Rotary Club to sleep out in the Cathedral Precincts. The group is doing this to raise awareness of the plight of vulnerable, homeless people throughout the area and to raise money for two local charities, Porchlight and Catching Lives. I am 'sleeping rough' for one night to help raise money and awareness about homelessness, an issue particularly close to my heart.

I am lucky to have a warm house, but becoming homeless is something that can very easily happen to many of us, either through relationship breakup or losing a job. Alcohol and other substance misuse and leaving an institution including the armed forces, local authority care, hospital and prisons are further causes for men. For women, physical or mental health problems and escaping a violent relationship are the most common reasons for becoming homeless. Once homeless, access to work and benefits is almost impossible, thereby worsening the problem
