Story
It's a really tough time for charities in the UK at the moment. It's predicted that the coronavirus lockdown will cost us £4 billion in lost fundraising.
At Diversity Role Models, the LGBT+ charity where I work as Head of Operations, we're not immune from this. We've had to cancel events, furlough staff, and have already lost income because we can't continue our work with schools.
Our work is vitally important. 45% of LGBT+ students are still bullied at school because of their sexuality or gender identity. And more than half still regularly hear homophobic, biphobic or transphobic language in their school.
Diversity Role Models' work makes a difference. Our role models help young people and the adults around them understand the impact that their words and actions have. They help LGBT+ young people see someone like them, and know that things can get better. And they encourage their heterosexual and cis-gendered peers to become LGBT+ allies.
I'll be streaming a 26-hour gameathon, starting at 10am on Sunday 26th April as part of the 2.6 Challenge. You'll be able to tune in and watch me streaming at twitch.tv/WillFletchUK, and I'll also have a variety of times when I'll be playing multiplayer games and you'll be able to join me.
Most importantly though, your donations will help Diversity Role Models survive this difficult period as an organisation. As a result, we'll be able to hit the ground running again once schools are reopened, and ensure that schools continue receiving the support that they need to ensure that LGBT+ young people aren't excluded.
