My first son, Freddie, was born at 22 weeks and lived for less than an hour.  There is so much yet to learn about why babies like Freddie are born too soon.  We must focus on research to find answers to the problem that can accompany childbirth.  It is the cause of so much heartbreak for families.

Premature birth is the leading cause of death and disability in children under 5. In the UK, 60,000 babies are born prematurely.  That is 1 in 12 babies.  Around the world, 15 million babies are born too soon.  1 million of them die.  Many face a lifetime of disability.  We do not know enough.

There is insufficient funding directed to pioneering research to develop new treatments to prolong pregnancy and to understand the causes of preterm birth.
