The roof of the Church of St Mary Magdalen, Oxford, has been in need of replacement for some time, and the water damage to the interior of the church is clear for all to see. Whilst we're delighted that a date has been set to undertake the necessary repairs, the funding is not complete.

The Choir of Mary Mags has long been known as an excellent and loyal group of singers, who meet on the vast majority of Sunday mornings in order to make music for our large and supportive congregation. We want to play our part for the fundraising appeal, and do something that's a bit unusual.

So... on the 20th and 21st January, between 5pm and 5pm, we’re going to perform the complete latin works of William Byrd. There are approx 200 motets, and 3 Masses, adding up to around 16 hours of music making.   Why Byrd?  Well, Mary Mags has a long history with early music. The first concert in the history of The Tallis Scholars took place in the Church in 1973.  The Brabant Ensemble (directed by former Director of music Stephen Rice) counted the building as their home for a long period, and I'm a member of Stile Antico. Byrd is also the most represented composer in the choirs’ library - there aren’t many composers whose works consistently please singer, congregation, and clergy alike!

This will be a terrifically exciting project, but it's going to be a real challenge, not least as I've agreed to conduct the whole lot!  Please consider supporting me by donating here, and help raise money for the restoration of a truly lovely place.
