Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am the director of a large garden centre in newton abbot

“It seemed a good idea at the time,”said keen cyclist Alan, who is Director of the Newton Abbot based Garden Centre and Farm Shop.

Each year Fermoys work together with local Primary School’s who get the chance to design and grow a vegetable garden in a Wheelbarrow. Over 40 local Primary Schools will be taking part in this years’ project and the winning barrows will all be taken up to Chelsea and displayed alongside barrows made by The Chelsea Pensioners in their garden on The Chelsea Fringe.

“ We were thinking of a way to raise money for Greenfingers and between us came up with the idea of our wheelbarrows being displayed at Chelsea. We have been working with Scott’s Miracle Gro and Peter Seebrook on their Love to Garden project at Chelsea and between us we thought it would be nice to display some of the barrows that local primary schools are designing for our annual Garden in a Wheelbarrow Competition. It was then that I had a flash of inspiration and decided that it would be great for us to cycle a barrow up to Chelsea visiting lots of other Garden Centres on the way and trying to raise awareness and money for HTA Charity Green fingers and the Charity supported by Scotts; Gardening Leave to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of Serving and ex-Service personnel using Horticultural Therapy, in walled gardens.”

Alan is looking to get sponsorship from garden suppliers and manufacturer’s   and will be visiting over twenty  garden centres on the route between Newton Abbot and London in the four days he will be cycling. He will be riding a tandem so is looking for volunteer’s along the way to get on the back of the bike which will be towing one of the barrows the 240 Miles to London between 18 and 22nd May and is hoping that a few Celebrity gardeners will  get on board his bike as it nears its destination at Chelsea.
