Story
We are walking in solidarity with the people of West Papua and to support the work of Papua Partners. Westcott has long-standing links with this remarkable and uniquely effective charity, which was founded in Westcott in 2006.
Westcott Walks With West Papua is taking place on bank holiday Monday, 29th August 2022, with a waymarked circular route (about 5km) finishing with a cream tea at Holy Trinity Church from 3.30-5.30pm!
Enjoy the walk any time on bank holiday Monday, or meet at Holy Trinity Church Westcott at 1.45pm for a 2pm start to walk with others. Walk in solidarity to raise awareness, to raise fund or just for fun - free cream tea for every walker!
You are also very welcome to just come for tea (suggested £5 donation)
For more information on the route and how to take part please email: westcottwalkswithwestpapua@protonmail.com
Funds raised will go to support communities and organisations in Papua to improve rural education and health for over 8000 people; support environmental champions who are protecting their communities; accompany and resource young men and women who are on the front lines of stopping violence against women, human rights abuses and building healthy non-violent communities; and invest in green businesses to help build sustainable futures for families and communities. The Land of West Papua and the Indigenous West Papuan people are increasingly threatened by environmental destruction, militarisation, human rights abuses, a shutdown of free speech as well as rampant corruption leaving West Papuans poor and marginalised in their own land. Women and children suffer the most with very poor access to health and education and high levels of violence against women. Thank you !
