Story
Hello everyone! ☺️
On the 22nd May 2016 I'm taking part in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life at Glasgow Green (5K) with my team of family and friends. I've decided to take on this challenge to give something back to one of the many charities that help saved my life.
My Story
In September 2010 my life changed forever. I was diagnosed with stage 3B Hodgkin's lymphoma. I was only 17 years old and had my whole life infront of me. I didn't think I'd get cancer...my world fell apart in the blink of an eye.
I started chemotherapy (ABVD) every two weeks and got into the routine of this for 6 months until I was finally placed into remission...happy days! This was sadly short lived, I found another lump a week before my 18th birthday and a biopsy confirmed that I had relapsed. I was going to have to have a stem cell transplant. I had no idea what to expect from this. I was terrified and once again my world was pulled away by this horrible disease. I began 8 months of gruelling high dose chemotherapy (IVE) and a transplant, but it worked. I was placed into partial remission again and soon afterwards I began to get my life back on track. I started to partake in "normal" activities like anyone my age should be doing.
Unfortunately once again remission didn't last long and in 2013 my cancer had made a comeback..I was told I would have to travel over 70 miles to the Beatson, Glasgow for intensive chemotherapy and a donor bone marrow transplant and that was only if they could find a match for me. It's fair to say at this point I thought this was it for me. It was all taking a huge toll on my body, mentally and physically but I needed to stay positive if I was going to fight this. I soon after found a match through the Anthony Nolan trust and began treatment straight away. 4 months of protein therapy followed by intensive chemotherapy and a 6 week long stay in isolation. Those were the most challenging weeks of my life and I still get queezy thinking about it.
So here comes the good news...in March 2014 I was told my transplant had put me into remission. I was completely Hodgkin's lymphoma free. NO MORE CANCER!!!! I couldn't quite believe it and although 2 years on I still spend a lot of time visiting post transplant clinics I am doing great and feel like I am ready to give something back to one of the many charities to help me and all the amazing people I have met through my journey but also in memory of the ones who have sadly been taken away.
I would appreciate any donation! THANK YOU! 💜
