Story

Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page. Wendy and Jason are going to be running 100km in August to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and funds for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA).

We have been motivated to take on this challenge and support this great charity after seeing the impact of MND on my daughters friends Dad, Fraser.

Fraser is husband to Orlagh, he is an Aussie who has made his home in Ireland, an Architect, an Artist, an Author, and a wonderful dad to the beautiful 7 year old Oonagh. Our kids started creche as babies and now attend the same school and I’ve seen Fraser being there as an amazing hands on father, always there with a huge smile on his face :)

MND is a very cruel disease, which currently doesn’t have a cure and the prognosis for most people with the condition is 2-5 years. I’m still learning about it, there is lots more for us all to learn about how we fight this disease and it’s absolutely devastating for any person or family directly impacted by this.

In such a dark time I’ve really admired how Fraser and Orlagh have chosen to navigate through this situation, finding and creating the light, the hope, that they really need during this difficult time. Truly we all need that light within our lives and sometimes we can just take it for granted when it is there.

Orlagh has organised this August 100k challenge and we are delighted to be able to join the Black and White movement (the name coming from the situation, which has is black and white, white being hope and black is death if no cure if found).

About the charity

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is the only organisation of its kind in the country providing specialised services to families affected by this terminal condition. The Association cannot slow the progression of MND or change the outcome but we can alleviate the feelings of isolation and frustration. We offer consistent support to approximately 400 families across Ireland who otherwise would have nowhere else to turn. Everybody with MND has different needs at different stages of their journey and we are here to help and guide them every step of the way. The services provided by the IMNDA are immediate and free of charge for everyone registered with the Association. Key services include: • Access to 4 outreach nurses directly employed by the IMNDA and funded entirely by donations. • Access to a home care grant. • Access to specialised equipment on loan (e.g. wheelchairs, hoists, communication aids etc). • Access to funding towards counselling sessions for the person with MND and family members. Your support is absolutely vital. More than 86% of our income comes from fundraising and donations.
