Story
On 29th September 2013, we said goodbye to a much loved Wife, Mum, Mother-in-law, Nan, Sister, Auntie and friend.
As you all know, Mum had a long battle with cancer; many rounds of treatment, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and even trial treatment. She knew this treatment would possibly prolong her life a little bit more, but also that she could help others in the future by having trial treatment - always helping others right to the end.
I can remember the day I had the conversation about St Raphaels with my mum. It really was the hardest conversation I had to have but, you all knew her - she accepted it because she knew it was the right thing to do.
After a few phone calls, we were in touch with the Hospice at Home Team. They enabled mum to stay at home, where she wanted to be, right to the end.
We had nurses round, which meant Dad could pop out and just be there to comfort and support us. They even stayed at night, so we could get a little sleep.
They were all so caring and professional.
There was one palliative care nurse in particular, my friend Julie, who visited us before and after her shifts, whether that was day or night. She made sure my mum was always clean and comfortable throughout. Ironically, Julie was with us when she passed away.
They really are fantastic.
I also had a couple of sessions with the councillor in the last few months of her life. I knew mum would be leaving us, but was finding it difficult to accept. They made me think in a different way about my feelings and how to deal with loss better.
So, please can you help me, help them, and raise as much as we can. They really rely on fundraising to provide this essential care to the people who need it the most.
Thank you for reading my story.
