Story
Sahara Charity Desert Trek
for St Barnabas Grantham Hospice
7-16 March 2014
· My name is Wendy Johnson and In March 2014, I will be taking part in a 100 km charity trek through the Sahara
· I will be raising much needed funds for St Barnabas Hospice in Grantham
· I am self-funding the cost of the trip so all the money raised will go to the charity
· I am asking people and local companies to sponsor me
The Journey
Trekking in the Sahara Desert is a unique and challenging once in a lifetime experience. The vast Sahara is a land of silence with no people, no television, no hotels and no toilets!
The ten day challenge starts with a flight to Marrakesh and two days drive over the Atlas mountains and through the Draa valley to M’Hamid and there we will reach the end of the road, literally! M’Hamid is a desert town and there we will meet our support team, complete with camels and handlers and our trek begins.
This is a camping trek and the heavy kit will be transported on camels leaving us carrying our rucksacks, water and sunscreen! There will be two half days and four full days of trekking , initially on low level dunes before tackling much larger dunes deep into the desert. The terrain is not all soft and includes some hard baked and rocky surfaces.
The Charity
The trek is for a very worthy cause – the St Barnabas Hospice – which provides inspiring and excellent care that helps people to live well and cope with dying. By changing the way people die, we change the way people live. St Barnabas provides specialist palliative and end of life care so people can access and receive the support they need to live out the end of their lives and ease the process of dying.
Self -Funded
I have chosen to cover 100% of the costs of the trek myself so that all of your sponsorship money goes to St Barnabas. From the first £10 donated not one penny is required to pay for the expedition but goes to the truly worthy cause.
Sponsorship
Donating is easy and you are making a big difference.
