Bath Half Marathon 2019 · 17 March 2019 ·

We are a conservation charity, working to look after special places for everyone.

Story

Jenny and Lis are going for a run.

The National Trust team in Somerset look after many special places in the outdoors, but the biggest (well, the tallest) place is Wellington Monument.

Standing high on the Blackdown Hills, Wellington Monument stand at 53 metres tall, making it the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world. Building work started in 1817 to commemorate the victory of the Duke of Wellington, his army and comrades at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

But, the story of the monument is not so victorious. It has had a chequered history of structural problems right from its early days, but after years of surveying and research the National Trust announced earlier this year that repair work for the most badly damaged areas will be starting in late spring 2019 and will continue for much of 2020. The Trust is fundraising towards the remaining £2 million needed to repair the whole monument and Jenny and Lis want to help.

"We want to help because Wellington Monument is more than just a pillar of historical importance. It strikes a chord of affection in many people's hearts. The community know it as a place for dog-walks, celebration and family. For many it's a symbol of home and holiday, adventure and safety and sparks memories in communities near and far."

By sponsoring our running of the Bath Half Marathon, you're helping the National Trust team look after this special place for ever - and you'll keep us motivated during the winter months of cold runs!

"We're grateful for anything you can give!"
