Who are the Rohingya?
The Rohingya are a Muslim minority population of Myanmar (Burma). They, by many human rights groups, are considered the most persecuted people in the world.
Rohingya Muslims have a long history of persecution in Myanmar, which has recently become a crisis with over 400,000 Rohingya fleeing to neighbouring Bangladesh.
In Myanmar, Rohingya are:
Unable to marry freelyDenied access to higher educationConsidered non-citizensDenied right to free movementDenied access to state healthcareDenied work in government jobsPrevented from purchasing motor vehiclesBanned from using mobile phonesIn 1982, Myanmar passed the 'Citizenship Law' which denied Rohingya Muslims citizenship and hence basic human rights. They are despised by the local non-Rohingya population.
Why should we help them?
The world has not seen ethnic cleansing and oppression to this level in recent years. What the non-Rohingya native population and government are complicit in is unacceptable and must not be tolerated.
We as human beings who want to see a better world should band together to both do what we can to stop the catastrophe and to aid those who are suffering.
So, what are you going to do?
We've got a group of volunteers ready to go in October to Bangladesh and help the Rohingya who have made it passed the border. All volunteers will be paying their own travel and living expenses so that we can take 100% of all donations we raise directly to the Rohingya in Bangladesh.
We'll be purchasing food, medicines, tents, bedding, clothing, hygiene products, and other basic essentials and distribute them directly to the Rohingya.
