Story
I lost my wife, Fiona, to cancer in December 2018. This disease left myself and my daughters Alexandra and Sophia devastated and left my 7 month old son Rafe without the opportunity of knowing his wonderful mother.
Fiona originally beat cancer in 2011 and went on to live life to the full. Having been treated at Velindre hospital we soon got involved in raising money and became ambassadors to the charity.
The work they carry out in clinical research and individual patient treatment is phenomenal. Coupled with advanced holistic support from specialist nurses, Velindre provides huge information and development in the fight against cancer not just in Wales, but through the UK and the rest of the World.
When Fiona lost her battle, Velindre were fantastic in caring for my family and ensuring that our needs were managed in the toughest of circumstances.
So, I am looking to raise as much as possible for this fantastic charity by walking 165 miles from London to Cardiff - and I know Fiona would think I’m crazy for doing a challenge like this - which keeps me amused. Fiona’s response would be bemusement, amusement and then total support - and my girls are very similar - that’s why we ask for your support in raising money for this great cause.
Starting at Tom Simmons restaurant at Tower Bridge, the walk will be between the 20th-26th September and will average approx 24 miles each day.
If anybody wants to walk for a couple of miles along the way, please come and join us - it would be great to share what should be an inspirational and emotional walk with new and old faces even if it’s just for the odd mile. As I have found with many charity challenges, it’s the people you meet along the way that provide huge motivation. More information on our route is at www.walkforfiona.co.uk and will be updated over the next few weeks.
It’s so important that we start winning these battles against cancer as too many lives are lost and families devastated by this disease. Whatever you can donate, small or large, it’s greatly appreciated!
