Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

In August 2017 my life changed forever. Sat in a small Doctors office with my wife we heard those words “It’s breast cancer”. That is when your world falls away from you. You focus on those words and everything else is a blur.

Nobody should have to phone relatives and friends to give them the bad news they have all been dreading.

Nobody should have to sit your sons down and give them the news that their Mum has cancer.

Nobody should have to reply to a 10 year old after they ask the question “is Mum going to die?”.

But this is only the beginning:

6 days later the surgeon removes the thing that’s changed your world. The stress and anxiety of the wait is unbelievable. It’s the only thing you can focus on. When that day comes it a weight off your mind to find that the cancers gone, they got it all and it’s not spread anywhere else.

The middle:

Next comes the Chemotherapy. This is 18 weeks of pure hell. Every three weeks watching that bright red drug disappear into Caz’s arm was awful. I work in the medical field and have never seen anything so vile disappear into someone’s arm.
The sickness, nausea, tiredness, fatigue and the one thing I never want to do again (shave your wife’s hair off) will eventually disappear from my memory.

The final part:

Radiotherapy begins with people prodding and poking Caz to get her in the correct position on the radiotherapy machine. 23 sessions of travelling 45 minutes to get to Weston Park took their toll (all for 9 minutes of burning). Battling snow and delays of up to 3 hours all wears you down.

This is my personal journey and feelings about cancer and the god awful experience that it has all been.

Out of all this Caz is doing well, family and friends have supported us along the way and I thank you all for your help. Old friends have remade new contact and my bank account is a lot smaller due to all the “dinners out”. There have been tears, frustrations and anxieties over the last 7 months but together as a family we will beat cancer.

So this leads me to this “Just Giving page”, probably well over a year ago I had a conversation with a work colleague about organising a coast to coast ride called “The Way Of The Rose’s”. This 170 miles over three days bike ride to get from Morecambe bay to Bridlington sea front sounded like a good idea at the time.

It’s organised now and it is my pledge to complete it on the 29th, 30th June and 1st July.

So please, please, please sponsor me and the other poor souls (Martyn Guest, Jeremy Egan, Mark McKenning and Dave Moss) undertaking this coast to coast experience so if the word “Cancer” is uttered again in any small Doctors office then those people will get the support and help that we have received from truly inspirational Consultants, Breast cancer nurses, Chemopherapy nurses, Radiotherapy nurses, therapists and volunteers.

Thank you

Wayne
