Story
In honour of my late dad, who died far too young at the age of 49 - due to poor management of type 1 diabetes.
I am a type 1 diabetic myself, treatment is so much better now than it was 30 years ago. I am running the 'London Marathon' with this disability to raise awareness, and importantly to aid the development of a cure.
Education is the key to understanding diabetes. Many people confuse type 1 with type 2 diabetes, but they are so so different. Type 1 diabetes is a hereditary disability, which causes the pancreas to fail, through genetics. This means a person with type 1 diabetes must inject themselves with insulin. This can lead to dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar levels. This is because of the unpredictability of how the body will react given constant changes in daily routine and diet. This has both severe acute and chronic consequences. I live with constant stress, always planning and feeling extremely unwell for the majority of the time. I try to put on a brave face for my family, however, people do not understand what goes on behind the scenes. It does put a strain on family life.
So I am going to finish the London Marathon - Not just to educate people on type 1 diabetes, but also to fulfil one of my lifetime ambitions - Not Letting Type 1 Diabetes Rule My Life!!
