Story
In April, “The Girls” are doing a 5k assault course in teams of 4 carrying a log in memory of our dear Issy and to raise funds and awareness about cardiac risks in young adults.
On the 22nd July 2015, Issy suffered a fatal cardiac arrest aged just 14. We later found that she had extensive fibrosis of the heart wall muscle, which may have been caused by arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC). This in turn can lead to interference of the electrical signals that cause the heart to beat properly causing an arrhythmia (chaotic heart rythmn) and a potentially fatal cardiac arrest.
Issy showed absolutely no signs or symptoms of this condition, as is the case in 80% of young adults who are affected. In fact, she was an active teenager who danced, swam and visited the gym regularly and never complained of any illness.
Simple heart screening, such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) can detect many heart problems, and our aim is to raise as much money as we can to get a programme of regular local screening in place in 2016 and beyond through the
charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
