Melanie's late father, Peter Alan Walters, was one of the founding members of Make-A-Wish UK and served as its director for seven years. In 1980, Peter's dear friend, Tommy Austin, co-founded the charity in Phoenix, AZ and in 1986, Peter founded The Make-A-Wish Foundation in the UK. Since then, Make-A-Wish has collectively granted more than 500,000 life-changing wishes worldwide for children with critical illnesses.

Melanie spent much of her childhood attending fundraising events with her parents and sisters, helping to support this wonderful charity. After her father passed away in 2006, following a most courageous battle with cancer, Melanie ran The Great North Run Half Marathon in the UK on behalf of the charity to honor her father and raise money for a cause very dear to her heart.
