The Walk to Freedom - 4th to 9th April 2021
* See website for updates: www.walktofreedom.co *
The peaceful people of Ukraine were attacked on 23rd February 2022 by Vladimir Putin and Russia.
Our Grandfather, Wolodymyr (Walter) Hnyda was a proud Ukrainian, born and raised near Ternopril, West Ukraine.
The distance from his village, Kupchyntsi, to what is now a safe border is 160 miles - roughly the length of Wales.
Our plan is to walk 30 miles a day over 6 days to reflect a 'walk to freedom' for a Ukrainian Refugee, escaping evil.
Grandpa fought across Europe for Ukrainian independence. He eventually ended up in South Wales and became a proud adopted Welshman and British Citizen. Despite this, his home country of Ukraine was never far from his thoughts and he was extremely active in the British Ukrainian community.
We have fond memories of his courageous stories and soulful Ukrainian hymns. As young men we recognised his qualities of warmth, kindness, resilience and stoicism; values of which we aspire to as individuals and are now on display to the world by the brave Ukrainian People.
For those who don’t know us, we are Michael, David and Richard Hnyda, A father and two sons from South Wales. Like many we've felt helpless and useless as the horrors of Russia’s unprovoked aggression have unfolded.
All money raised will be donated to British Ukrainian Aid, a charity helping those displaced in Ukraine with humanitarian and medical aid.
Thank you for your generosity in supporting us, British Ukrainian aid and the Ukrainian People.
Слава Україні! Slava Ukrayini! Glory to Ukraine!
