Story
I'm Walking Together, Saving Lives this September for Blood Cancer Awareness Month. I'm taking on a sponsored walk / jog of 3 miles (4.82 km) each day in September, Blood Cancer Awareness month, to raise lifesaving funds for Anthony Nolan.
The reason I chose 3 miles/day - Anthony Nolan gives THREE people a second chance of life every single day, by facilitating lifesaving stem cell matches.
This sounds like a short distance, but trying to fit this in each day between work, training etc. will be a challenge for me personally, but it won't compare to the challenge Haematology (Blood Cancer) patients face awaiting or receiving a stem cell transplant.
I work in the North West Cancer Centre. I've seen first hand patients anxiously awaiting for an allogenic transplant donor (the stem cells come from a donor whose tissue type closely matches the patient's). I've also seen those who have received a transplant and their joy at being given "a second chance at life". The reason I signed up to the Anthony Nolan charity is the reality that someday it could be me, or a family member, awaiting this life changing treatment and to be able to offer my stem cells to someone to give them hope for the future was the least I could do, in comparison to what they go through.
Today, five people will start their search for a stranger to save their life. Anthony Nolan is the charity that makes lifesaving connections between people with blood cancer and incredible strangers ready to donate their stem cells.
It costs £40 to add each new potential donor to the Anthony Nolan stem cell register and every new person on the register means another chance for someone to find their lifesaving match.
By donating to my page, you will be giving more people with blood cancer the chance of a future. Thank you. Without you, there is no cure.
