Story
We (Roger Penny and Jason Marchant) have been hiking together for decades. We've tackled several countries, overcome adversity (usually a 'Jase injury'), battled wildlife (midges in Scotland) and been rained on a lot.
Across all those walks, we met fantastic people from all walks of life. Now we're tackling something we've always wanted to do - walking coast to coast (almost) along Hadrian's Wall. So that's what we're doing in September.
The wall is a historic symbol of 'keeping out the undesirables' (sorry, Scotland) but thankfully we, as a nation, have mostly got over that. Brexit may argue against this, but we still believe people mostly just want to help people in trouble, wherever they hail from. So we thought as well as ticking something off the bucket list, we'd raise some cash for families going through unimaginable hardship. That's where your generosity comes in.
Please give what you can to support the cause. None of this is going towards the cost of the hike (we're paying for that entirely), every penny goes to the UN's refugee charity. Dig deep people.
Here's the blurb from UNHCR, to put the case better than we ever could...
The people of Afghanistan have lived with conflict for more than four decades. Entire generations have never known peace and millions remain displaced.
Renewed violence and instability have created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Hundreds of thousands of people have been newly displaced across the country since the start of this year alone. Many had to flee with only the clothes on their back and are struggling to survive in appalling conditions, sheltering in tents made only of cloth.
UNHCR is on the ground and doing everything possible to protect civilians, but urgently needs public support to help it reach families in desperate need.
Please help us to protect people forced to flee. £35 will provide five sanitary kits including laundry soap, toilet soap and sanitary napkins.£52 can buy a core relief kit, providing a family with blankets, sleeping mats, mosquito nets and a kitchen set. £310 can provide an emergency shelter kit, incl. a family tent and plastic tarpaulins.
