Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We have both signed up to March for Men with Jeff Stelling – walking a football grounds marathon between Millwall, Chelsea, QPR and finishing at Tottenham Hotspur.
Our reason for raising money for Prostate Cancer UK is a personal one. In summer 2020 while the country was struggling with lockdown we were dealing with a different nightmare, as Tony (Bungy for the Navy and football mates) was diagnosed with Advance Prostate Cancer, just before his 60th birthday. It started in February when he had to stop running for what we believed was a simple running injury, but he just couldn’t shake it off. Struggling to get help as things got worse due to covid, he went to a private physio for treatment. That didn’t help either, and as pain then developed in his ribs she referred him back to the GP for further tests. It was then that a blood test picked up the likelihood of prostate cancer. We were then in a whirlwind of appointments, scans and tests, praying that it was somehow something else. But on September 15th we got the devastating diagnosis that he has Advanced Prostate Cancer. Advanced meaning it has already spread to his bones and it is now incurable, they can only manage it for as long as they can. It was cancer in his hip and ribs causing the pain he had been experiencing. We want to raise as much money as possible for Prostate Cancer UK for two reasons. Firstly to raise awareness, Tony had no urinary signs that anything was wrong and we have learned that there are often little or no signs until it has already spread. Secondly, the treatment that Tony is getting is only possible because of the work of this brilliant charity, and he is taking part in a research trial himself. He feels very strongly that he wants to do what he can to help other men and maybe avoid this nightmare for other families.
As you may know we have previously run two marathons before, in 2017 and 2019. Tony has always wanted to do the London Marathon but has never been able to secure a place. Unfortunately this can never happen now so we thought this was a close 2nd! Walking one is by no means be the easier option, as the treatment side effects will make this a huge challenge for Tony. We hugely appreciate anything you can give to support us in our challenge.
