Story

Around 5000 people are living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in the UK at any one time. MND is a fatal, rapidly progressing disease which affects the brain and spinal cord. It attacks the nerves that control movement and eventually leaves people unable to move, communicate or breathe. It kills a third of people within a year of diagnosis and half within two years. There is no cure.

The Exeter and East Devon branch of the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association has launched an emergency appeal for donations to maintain their vital support for people living with MND, a terminal illness. Local people with MND turn to the branch for advice, face-to-face meetings and importantly can apply for financial grants to help improve their quality of life.

But with the coronavirus pandemic cancelling or postponing fundraising events, us, the volunteers at the Exeter and East Devon branch are determined to find other ways to raise money to continue supporting local people facing the devastating illness. Although we cannot organise an event where we would all meet to raise awareness and funds for our local branch, we can still do so separately.

What is the event?

On the 21st June, a day marked as the Global Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day, people across the South West put on their walking boots to raise money to support those affected by MND in and around Devon.

A huge heartfelt thank you goes to everyone who has already supported us - we couldn't do this without you!

We are now calling on anyone who would still like to support the Exeter and East Devon MND Association branch by taking part in the Virtual Walk to D'Feet to raise awareness and money through doing so.

What is the Virtual Walk to D'Feet?
Simply put on MND Association t-shirts, hoodies, wrist bands or any apparel that you might have, or wear MND Association colours (orange and blue) and take members of your household for a walk of your choice. This could be anywhere and anytime, and whichever length suits you best.

We would also love for you to take pictures and video snippets from your walk, so that we can use these in a promotional video of the Walk, which would be featured on our social and digital media.

Photo and video contributions
Please share any contributions on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MNDExeterEastDevon), or, if you'd prefer, send them to us directly through the wetransfer.com website, addressed to info@mndexetereastdevon.org. You do not need an account to do this and you simply select your files, your email address and the above email address. Please make sure you hold your phone sideways to produce 'landscape' images and videos as these will result in a better-quality result.

Donations
We would like to invite anyone taking part in the Virtual Walk to D'Feet to consider donating an amount of their choosing through this webpage. The money raised will be used to directly support people living with MND in our region, by providing them with useful resources and grants to improve their quality of life as much as we are able to.

For any enquiries, please  email us at info@mndexetereastdevon.org

Happy walking!
