Story
As I work at Ripple Effect, I want to stand with our farming families during these extremely challenging times. I am doing the 321 Triple Challenge. For just 3 days, I will live on £3, then £2, then £1 in order to experience first-hand the challenges faced in East Africa as families are facing the worst hunger emergency in 40 years. Please help me raise vital funds for this Emergency Appeal by giving what you can today.
Our programmes build long-term solutions to hunger and poverty. But the rural families we work with are facing an unprecedented triple crisis. Weeks away from the planting season, we must act now.
Crisis 1: Covid
Lockdowns of rural communities closed markets and slashed rural incomes. The aftermath: people still have fewer livestock and severely depleted food stocks and savings.
Crisis 2: Global cost of living
East Africa is a major importer of wheat, maize and seed oils for cooking. The war in Ukraine has driven food inflation up by an average of 30%.
Crisis 3: Climate
Chaotic rain seasons disrupt planting and drive invasions of pests such as desert locusts. Droughts in the Horn of Africa since 2020 mean crops have failed and millions of livestock have died.
The result: the worst hunger emergency in 40 years
When rural communities can’t grow their way out of hunger, parents don’t eat in order to feed their children. No income means children are taken out of school, and no money to pay medical fees. No harvest means farmers have no seeds for the next season’s planting.
We urgently need to provide seeds, tools and training to these farmers. Please donate what you can. In order to create a ripple effect, please share this with your networks, on social media and tell 3 other people or more.
Thank you for your generous support.
