Story

My name is Violet and I am eight years old. I was born with a rare condition called OTC (Ornithine TransmyCarbylase) Deficiency, which meant that I spent a lot of time in hospital and I had a PEG tube in my tummy for all my food and medicines. When I was two, my doctor told my Mum and Dad that a liver transplant could give me a happy future. I had my first transplant at Leeds Children's Hospital when I was two and a half. My first transplant stopped working properly after a few days and I needed a second urgent transplant, which saved my life. I don't really remember my transplants, but I think about my donors a lot and I really hope I make them proud. I feel really grateful to them because they gave me the chance to do normal but amazing things like enjoy eating my favourite foods, ride my bike, play with my friends, go dancing, learn to swim and even have a pet. Without my transplant, my puppy George could never have joined our family because we spent too much time in hospital to look after a pet.

On the 10th of October I will be doing a Countryfile Ramble and abseil in the Mendip Hills with Steve Brown. We are trying to raise money for Children in Need because they support lots of children to overcome challenges in their lives.

One of the many things that Children in Need help to pay for is the Transplant Sport Kids and Teens Organiser. Simon helps children who have had a transplant to get together, play sports and have fun with their friends. Transplant Sport has given me the confidence to always be myself, try new things and think positively. It has given me amazing friends, and shown me that winning isn't always about coming first or getting a medal, it can be about overcoming a challenge and feeling really proud of yourself.

I am really excited to be doing the ramble and abseil with Steve. It is going to be a big challenge for us both but I think we will help each other find our brave. Steve uses a wheelchair and I think we have both had to be determined to find ways to overcome challenges. For a long time, I was very scared of blood tests and I really wanted to feel brave when I had them. By being determined and with help from some of my Leeds Children's Transplant Team friends, Harvey's Gang and the Leeds Children's Hospital Play Team, I beat procedural anxiety and this year for the first time, I feel confident when I have my blood tests. I hope that by doing our ramble and abseil challenge, Steve and I will be able to show people that no matter what challenge you want to overcome, you can do it if you are determined and if you have good support behind you.

I have started a fundraising team because I would like to help raise a lot of money for Children in Need by inspiring other children to take on their own challenges for Children in Need. I would like to help raise a total of £1000 because I think it will take 1000 bits of brave to do my abseil and I would really like to help Children in Need to support lots of children to overcome challenges in their lives. I hope that talking about OTC Deficiency will help more doctors, nurses and midwives to know about this rare condition so they can save people's lives. I hope that by talking about my transplants I can inspire people to talk to their family about becoming an organ donor hero one day.

Thank you very much for reading my page. Please share your organ donation wishes with your family and if you can then please give some Pudsey pounds to Children in Need so that lots of children can get help and support to have happy, healthy lives and achieve their dreams. Thank you!!

Love from Violet xoxox
