Simplyhealth Great North Run 2019 · 8 September 2019 ·
The day before Christmas Eve 2014 I was given the devastating news that the lumps that had appeared in my breast and armpit were cancer. 2015 was a rollercoaster of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After that, and still ongoing, followed more operations and medications whilst trying to be a working mum of two gorgeous little boys (not so little now!). In the midst of this chaos I found Maggie’s Newcastle, built in the grounds of the Freeman Hospital and serving the whole of the North East and Cumbria.
Maggie’s is about empowering people to live with, through and beyond cancer by bringing together professional help, communities of support and building design to create exceptional centres for cancer care.
Maggie’s is there for anyone and everyone affected by cancer, including family and friends. Without Maggie’s my time during treatment, and still now, would have been a million times harder.
Maggie’s is funded entirely by the generosity of fundraisers and volunteers and costs around £2,400 each day to run.
I wanted to try and raise some money for Maggie’s and I decided to do the Great North Run (as I’ve never done it before and it will be a massive challenge for me). To my delight I soon found many of my friends and family wanted to join me and help fundraise, which was just amazing. Together we have formed Team Vicky and hope to raise over £2,400 together for Maggie’s Newcastle.
We are all so grateful for any sponsorship, no matter how little, and together we will hopefully reach our target and go a small way to keeping Maggie’s door open for other people, and their families, who find themselves in a similar position that I did.
Some of us are runners but quite a few of us have never run competitively or taken part in a sport before, but we all have same goal-to get to the end and raise as much as possible for Maggies in the process :-)
Thank you,
Team Vicky xxxx
