On 18th May, a group of willing walkers, runners and Buggathoners (walkers with babies) will be donning their Superhero outfits for the second time (due to Jason's love of comics and comicbook heroes) to walk 10k in support of CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).
We will be walking from York House Gardens/Champions wharf, which is where we released Jason's ashes into the Thames, to Ham house on the opposite side of the river and then back again.
The money raised will go to CRY's research program which specialises in the field of inherited cardiac conditions and sudden cardiac death, including aortic dissection. This cause is particularly significant to me both because of what happened to Jason and because of the potential impact to my son - any sponsorship for my taking part is therefore greatly appreciated - as is any support on the day. So come along....and laugh at the sweaty group of amblers in leotards and capes... :)
My Story
Jason Nixon, my husband, best friend and father to our then 6 week old baby, Joshua, died unexpectedly from an aortic dissection on 5th February 2013.
He was only 40 and aortic dissection is incredibly rare at this age however it has since transpired that his mother had also passed away at a similar age for similar reasons. Our son will therefore now also be monitored regularly as, if caught in time, tears in the aorta can be surgically repaired and a dissection hopefully prevented. Had screening and better identification mechanisms been in place to spot this in Jason, it has been confirmed that intervention would have enabled him to be alive today.
Funding for research and screening is therefore critical to preventing more tragic and unnecessary young deaths.
