It’s hard to believe and heartbreaking to watch this needless tragedy unfold. The tremendous strength, courage and bravery not only of the Ukrainian people, but also those who have travelled selflessly far and wide to help.  Not to forget those in Russia standing in solidarity protests risking not only their freedom, but their lives too. 

If the last two years has shown us anything it’s how quickly life can change. Just imagine travelling to work one day then squeezing your life into a plastic bag the next. Minutes later you are holding your hand against a train window to a loved one you may never see again before speeding off to an unfamiliar land.

Imagine living under the town you once knew listening to the sounds of devastation. Bombs falling, sirens blaring and people dying. All whilst you read a story to your little one, desperately trying to shield their reality and hide your own fear. No food to eat and just melted snow to drink. 

Imagine having to stand and fight, but this is not an invisible gun or pretend trigger you hold tight. Overnight you’ve become a warrior with the lives of your people and the freedom of your country weighing down upon your shoulders. A yellow ribbon for protection. Perhaps you’re a Russian soldier who doesn’t want this war either. Your only safe way out and ticket home is to shoot yourself in the leg or foot.

I know that running 26.2 miles is a drop in the ocean for the distances millions of Refugees are travelling every single day, but I hope that each step will be someone’s footprint closer to safety. 

There is no doubt that our Ukrainian friends need our help and support and they have it whole heartedly,  but there are others that mustn’t be forgotten too. Let’s help all refugees be freed from fear and recover from the trauma they’ve endured and give them back their future. 

Helping one person may not change the world, but it could change the world for one person. I know that together we can help change the world for more than one. You never know, one day that one person could be you.
