Story
Whether it's on a professional or personal level, our hearts have been touch by dementia. Through out my career as a nurse I have met many patients and families who have been affected.
Reflecting on these experiences, the most common thought I turn to is that many families are unaware of the support within the community. To raise awareness and raise money, by challenging myself to a new athletic experience out of my comfort zone, I am taking on the Great Manchester Run 10K for Dementia UK!
Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Thier nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care to families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimers disease. They help people with dementia stay independent for longer, and support the people caring for them so they have the strength to cope with the bad days, and the energy to enjoy the good days. They have the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems, helping families take back control when they are struggling.
£5 - this amount could cover the costs of two people calling the free Dementia helpline.
£33 - this amount could pay for a new Admiral nurse to support a family for one hour, with the time to listen and the knowledge to solve problems.
£50 - this amount could pay for an Admiral Nurse to spend quality time with a carer who may be feeling desperately alone and unsupported.
£100 - this amount covers the cost of 35 people contacting an Admiral nurse via the helpline for free.
£125 - this amount could pay for an Admiral Nurse to answer calls for one evening on the Dementia helpline, when other sources of support have closed for the night.
£230 - this amount could pay for a brand new nurse for a whole day to support families facing dementia.
£470 - this amount could pay for a full day essential clinical supervision and trianing for five Admiral Nurses to ensure they provide the highest level of care at all times.
£515 - this amount could cover the cost of two Admiral Nurses taking helpline calls for people with nowhere else to turn all day on a Sunday.
